The Four Furies of the Apocalypse

Combining Greek and New Testament mythology is one way to understand some of what is happening in the Trump administration.

In Greek mythology, the Furies were goddesses of vengeance who punished the wicked, especially those who committed crimes against the gods, in this case Donald Trump. They lived in the underworld, emerging to inflict disease and madness in the most cruel of ways.

In New Testament mythology, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, symbolizing conquest, war, famine, and death, were understood to be harbingers of the Last Judgement, unleashing divine judgement, in this case Donald Trump’s judgement, on the world.

It should be clear by now that Kristi Noam, Pam Bondi, Steven Miller, and Caroline Leavitt are indeed the embodiment of the four furies of the apocalypse. No amount of plastic surgery, concealer, wrinkle cream, and scalp polish can hide their inherent anger and cruelty, their eager willingness to be part of Donald Trump’s brutal and vengeful attack on democracy and society.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noam undeniably revels in the misery that ICE is bringing to millions of undocumented people who have been living peacefully in this country for years, even decades. She clearly enjoys dressing up as a vengeful ICE warrior queen, from her hat down to her boots. There appears to be no limit to how much senseless cruelty she is willing to impose on the men, women, and children who are in this country without proper documentation, or are here legally but with a past criminal record for which they have made full legal restitution.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi undeniably revels in the legal power of the Department of Justice to truly weaponize its authority to seek vengeance and retribution against the enemies of Donald Trump, and to silence any source of dissent. She was a former lobbyist for special interest groups and foreign governments, acting against the best interests of the American people. She is clearly a gun for hire. This makes her willingness to pursue anyone that Donald Trump directs her to pursue entirely reprehensible yet entirely understandable.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Steven Miller may not be a biological woman, but cruelty, vengeance, and retribution are his calling cards. He is brilliant, he is manipulative, he is a perfect Rasputin. From what he has said publicly, he has been filling Donald Trump’s ears with his sweet songs about hatred of non-white immigrants and illegal aliens alike. Whatever else they talk about, it is unlikely to be in the best interests of the American people.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt, a.k.a. the Secretary of Propaganda, is clearly not interested in being an actual Press Secretary. This is a role that would require her to provide factual information and to follow the decorum of the position by treating reporters respectfully and giving factual answers to questions asked of her. Instead, she viciously attacks reporters who ask probing questions, and defends and glorifies without exception every action that Donald Trump takes, no matter how cruel, vindictive, or unconstitutional his actions may be.

All four Furies of the Apocalypse exhibit a cold-blooded ruthlessness and lack of either conscience or compassion that is truly alarming. One gets the sense that there is no limit to what they would say or what they would do in their service to Donald Trump.

According to Greek mythology, the furies came from hell but punished only the wicked. Trump’s furies may have come from hell as well, but they have chosen to punish the vulnerable, the principled, the honest, and the sincere.

May the true gods help us.
